West Springfield has embarked on a yearlong, fundraising outdoor art project that includes businesses, artists and West Side students. The town Mascot is a West Highland White Terrier (Westie). There will be 40 forty-inch fiberglass Westies painted by 40 artists displayed in ‘litters’ throughout the main streets. Each terrier is sponsored by businesses, which choose the artwork from a portfolio of work with designs for terriers on different themes.

The first “Alpha Dog” sponsor to sign up for this project is Balise Motor Sales. Being an “Alpha Dog” entitles Balise to display four dogs around their dealerships. Crystal Childs is one of four featured artists that Balise has chosen, and she will be painting “Copper”. This dog will honor the West Springfield Police department and all the work that they do.

If you’ve ever seen the fiberglass painted cow sculptures made famous in so-called “cow parades” throughout the world, get ready for West Springfield’s much cuddlier take on the idea: Terriers Around Town (TAT).

West Springfield is culminating a yearlong fundraising effort this summer with the outdoor art project. Its calendar of events kicked off May 22 with a public preview of completed terrier sculptures from among a pack of 40 fiberglass canines.

When Jane E. Barrientos and Christine A. Costanzi told people they wanted to raise money for children’s arts programs by selling fiberglass West Highland terriers to place around town, people here thought they were crazy.

However, businesses have paid thousands of dollars to sponsor 4-foot-high terriers painted to go with various themes to raise money in what the two women have dubbed the Terriers Around Town program.

Terriers will soon be seen across town in a communal effort to supplement arts education throughout West Springfield Public Schools.

Terriers Around Town has embarked on a yearlong fundraising effort in the form of 40 fiberglass terriers 40 inches tall, sponsored by local businesses and decorated by artists to be displayed throughout the community for auction. The first “naked” (undecorated) terrier, the community’s mascot, will be on display at the Naked Puppy Party on March 5.

Be on the lookout because by next summer terriers will be all over town.

The West Springfield Public Schools’ Creative Arts Committee is taking on a new initiative to promote community involvement in the arts. The “Terriers Around Town” campaign allows local artists to create about 40 fiberglass terrier sculptures throughout town, which will be auctioned off to raise funds for art programs within the school system.
